The Modern Horizontal Fence Homeowners Are Actually Asking For

Composite is what you install when you want the warmth of real wood and none of its upkeep. The boards are a capped wood-and-polymer blend — they don’t rot, splinter, gray out, or need sanding and staining every few seasons. We install them most often in the horizontal slat style: wide boards running side to side on aluminum-reinforced posts, which is the cleanest, most architectural fence line you can put on a modern or renovated NJ home.

Horizontal composite is our signature composite install, and we also build traditional vertical privacy runs in the same material. Either way the structure matters as much as the boards: we set posts in concrete, use reinforced framing so long horizontal spans stay dead straight, and finish the top and ends with matching trim caps so no cut edges show.

Frequently Asked Questions

Composite boards are a wood-fiber and polymer blend with a hard protective cap, so you get real woodgrain texture and depth without rot, splinters, or refinishing. Compared to vinyl it’s heavier, more solid to the touch, and looks far more like lumber — which is why it costs more than both wood and standard vinyl.

Yes — horizontal is the style we install most. It does run higher than vertical: horizontal boards need closer post spacing and reinforced framing so the spans stay perfectly level over the length of the run, and that’s more posts and more labor for the same linear footage.

Very well. It doesn’t absorb water the way wood does, so freeze-thaw cycles don’t cause the checking and cupping you see on cedar, and the capped surface shrugs off salt air — a strong choice for Monmouth and Ocean County coastal properties.

No staining, ever. Capped composite holds its color, and any settling in tone happens in the first season and then stays put. Maintenance is a hose-down, or soap and water if you get something on it.

Woodgrain grays, walnut and browns, and cedar tones are the common finishes, typically in 6 ft privacy heights with shorter runs available for front yards and pool areas. We bring physical samples to the estimate so you can see the finish in your own light.

What Affects Composite Fence Installation Cost in New Jersey

No two properties price the same. Every Imperial Fence quote is itemized in writing — these are the factors that move the number.

01

Linear footage

The biggest driver — more feet means more posts, panels, and labor. We measure exactly on the estimate visit.

02

Style & grade

Within any material, style and grade move the per-foot price — we quote the options side by side.

03

Terrain & slope

Slopes, rocky soil, and tight access add digging and cutting time. Flat, open yards install fastest.

04

Gates

Each gate adds hardware and build time — and quality gate hardware is worth every dollar.

05

Permits & old fence removal

Township permit fees and old-fence removal, when needed, round out the quote. Both are itemized in writing.
